It’s not an exaggeration to say it was a traffic nightmare on the Gardiner Expressway this morning.  All westbound lanes were closed between the Humber and Royal York after the full overhead sign structure came down on the expressway at 5:10 am.  Toronto Police Constable Clint Stibbe told CP24 on the scene, “a Cadillac Escalade mounted the north curb of the Gardiner Expressway, went onto the shoulder, and then went up on top of the guardrail striking the overhead sign, knocking it to the ground and then finally coming to a rest some distance down the road.”  After the sign came down, another vehicle ran into it.  “The two occupants of that vehicle, they didn’t suffer any injury but they were here on their honeymoon, actually on their way to Pearson to fly back to Italy,” Constable Stibbe explained, “Obviously being involved in the collision would’ve delayed them getting onto the flight, but Toronto Fire was good enough to take them to the airport to make sure they made their 8:20 flight this morning.”

Lanes of the westbound Gardiner between the Humber and Royal York started reopening just before 10am.
