Best-selling author Lynn Coady has won the 2013 Scotiabank Giller Prize for her collection of short stories, Hellgoing.

The 43-year-old Edmonton writer was chosen from a shortlist of five authors by a jury of her peers consisting of Margaret Atwood, Esi Edugyan, and Jonathan Lethem.

In awarding Coady Canada’s most prestigious literary award, the jury wrote that Hellgoing offers “a stupendous range of attitudes, narrative strategies, and human situations.”

Coady is the author of the best-selling novel The Antagonist. She says she finds it interesting that her win comes in the same year as Alice Munro’s Nobel Prize for a collection of short stories, suggesting it could mean a resurgence of the short story form.

The announcement of the $50,000 Giller Prize was made last night at a black-tie dinner in Toronto.
