ROB FORD'S POLITICAL FUTURE BEING CONSIDERED BY CITY COUNCIL

The questions continue to mount after yesterday’s stunning admission by Mayor Rob Ford that he has used crack cocaine.

At City Hall, many councillors continue to call for Ford to take a leave of absence. Janet Davis says she took an oath when she assumed office, promising to follow a code of conduct. She says the mayor took the same oath, but has “failed to meet the ethical standard of conduct expected of a mayor”.

Other councillors are saying much the same thing, and urging Ford to take a leave of absence to sort out his personal problems.

And other experts are weighing in as well. Mark Elliot is an addiction research counsellor. He says Ford’s admission of a drinking problem, a fondness for marijuana, and having used crack “goes way above and beyond normal behaviour.”

So far, the Mayor is ignoring advice from even his closest advisors to take some time off. So some councillors are working on motions that would limit his powers, including his ability to change committee chairs. Another would essentially strip Ford’s office budget.  The motions will be considered by city council next week.
