Members of Canada’s Disaster Assistance Response Team or DART, are heading to the Philippines after millions of people were left stranded by Typhoon Haiyan.
DART will provide assistance including medical treatment and clean water. Earlier, Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed condolences to the president of the Philippines and offered support in the aftermath of the devastating storm. The lives of at least 9.7 million people in the region have been disrupted and thousands are feared dead. It’s been four days since Typhoon Haiyan hit, and bodies still lie in the streets. Officials estimate as many as 10-thousand people may be dead in the city of Tacloban alone. At last report, the Canadian Red Cross had raised 1.2 million dollars for the Philippines which Ottawa is promising to match.
