New York’s new World Trade Center has reached  1,776 feet – surpassing Chicago’s Willis Tower.

The Height Committee of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat confirmed the new building’s status today.

The committee is recognized as the final adjudicator  of building heights around the globe – and it was weighing whether a design change meant the needle atop 1-World Trade Center is indeed  part of the actual building,  or merely the equivalent of a broadcast antenna.

The committee announced today that the needle is a spire, and therefore, part of the actual structure.

The tower has been constructed on the site of the 9-11 attacks on The World Trade Centre twin towers  in 2001.
