The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers is bringing you – Canada’s 150th birthday – at The federal Museum of Civilization.

The museum  has announced a partnership with the oil industry lobby group – as an official sponsor of  exhibits to mark 150 years since Confederation.

The five-year sponsorship amounts to $1 million – and is the largest ever for the Museum of Civilization.

Mark O’neill, the  President and CEO of the Gatineau, Quebec museum says such sponsorships are going to become more common in future – with government funding failing to keep up with the rising costs of exhibitions.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and Imperial Oil stirred up  controversy in 2011 – when they sponsored exhibits at the federal Museum of Science and Technology.

Documents later revealed the groups had exerted pressure to change some exhibit content that they felt treated the industry too harshly.
