It appears Prime Minister Harper’s government allowed the largest American spy agency to conduct widespread surveillance in Canada during the 2010 G8 and G20 summits.  CBC News is reporting that top secret documents retrieved by U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden reveal the U.S. turned its Ottawa embassy into a security command post during a six day spying operation by the National Security Agency.

The report also says an NSA briefing note describes the American agency’s operation plans at the Toronto summit meeting and points out they were closely coordinated with the Canadian “partner”, the Communications Security Establishment Canada.  The secret NSA documents are said to list all of the main agenda items for the G20 in Toronto – international development, banking reform, countering trade protectionism, and so on, with the U.S. spy agency promising to support “U.S. policy goals”.
