Section 16 of the Parliament of Canada Act makes it illegal to give a parliamentarian money in an attempt to have influence. Today in Ottawa, the Liberals sent a letter to the RCMP alleging that the act has been violated in a payment involving Senator, Mike Duffy. Liberal Mike Casey wants an investigation into whether someone in the Conservative Party of Canada promised to pay Duffy’s contested living expenses. Casey was prompted to write the letter after an RCMP affidavit was filed in court last week. It suggests Conservative Party fundraiser Senator, Irving Gerstein was prepared to use party funds to reimburse Duffy as one of a number of conditions he had laid out in an agreement to pay back his expenses.
