Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in Toronto last night, attending a dinner for the Jewish National Fund’s Canadian chapter. And he gave the crowd at least two reasons to cheer.  “I’ll tell you friends, what I’m going to be doing in January.  I’m going to be going and visiting the State of Israel,” Harper announced to much applause.  He will also visit Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.

Prime Minister Harper then spent half an hour playing the piano and singing with a backup band, performing tunes by Buddy Holley, The Beatles, The Who, and Neil Diamond.

Less than two years from the next federal election, Harper and the Conservatives are slipping in voter support.  A new survey by the Canadian Press and Harris-Decima indicates the Liberals, under new leader Justin Trudeau, have 34 per cent support, while the Conservatives are at 26 and the NDP at 24.

The poll was taken after the Liberal’s strong showing in the four by-elections. Pollster Allan Gregg says it indicates traditional Liberals — the so-called professional class and women — are returning to the fold, while stalwart Conservatives — men and rural voters — appear to be expressing disappointment with the Harper government.
