Prime Minister Stephen Harper says the world has lost one of its great moral leaders – and Nelson Mandela’slegacy for his country, and the world, is the example he set through his own “long walk to freedom.”
Harper has issued a statement saying “with grace and humility, Mandela modelled how peoples can transform their own times and their own lives.”
The former South African President was the first living person to be awarded honorary Canadian citizenship.
It happened in a ceremony at the Museum of Civilization in Hull on November 19th, 2001.
Mandela was deeply grateful for the leading role Canada played in ending apartheid in South Africa.
He made the first of three trips here in 1990, within months of his release after 27 years in prison – and he returned eight years later as South Africa’s president.
