Alice Munro – Canada’s master of the short story – says she was “so proud” to see her daughter Jenny in Stockholm today to accept the Nobel Prize For Literature on her behalf.
Munro is 82 years old and was not well enough to travel to the Swedish capital but the literary legend watched the proceedings at the home of her daughter Sheila in Victoria, BC.
Jenny Munro accepted her mother’s Nobel Prize at a lavish event attended by Sweden’s royal family.
Alice told The Canadian Press that she thought the ceremony was “marvellous” and was surprised by the extravagance of it.
She says she thinks “any Canadian gets rather surprised at these splendours.”
Alice Munro is the only Canadian born and raised author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature and only the 13th woman to win a Nobel.
Munro says she hasn’t decided yet how she’ll celebrate her win: which comes with $1.2 million dollars.
