The Ontario government is feeling the heat over the latest report on spending at Ontario Power Generation.

The OPG has fired three senior executives in the wake of a blistering report from the Auditor General. Bonnie Lysyk says her office found that OPG was paying top executives compensation well beyond those offered in the private sector. Bonuses of up to $1.3-million were paid to senior executives, and the company had set up a lavish pension plan out of line with other public service plans.

The three fired executives were in charge of  compensation.

OPG Chairman Jake EPP says the company is reducing the bonuses for this year, and has asked the government to take a look at the entire salary structure.

But the opposition parties say the government is to blame by not keeping tabs on compensation. They point to the Auditor General’s report that shows the lavish compensation packages are pushing up electricity rates in the province.
