Theatre owners in London’s West End want to reassure patrons that their venues are safe.

The Society of London Theatre says all of its facilities undergo regular inspections, and an incident such as the partial collapse of the ceiling at the Apollo Theatre is extremely rare.

Authorities are carrying out a structural assessment after more than 75 people in the packed auditorium were injured when chunks of plaster and wood fell from the ceiling into the audience during a performance of the hit play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

The Apollo is more than 100 years old. It’s owned by Nimax Theatres, which described the incident as “shocking and upsetting.”

An initial report on what may have caused the collapse is expected today after an overnight survey. The building remains cordoned off and performances have been cancelled until January 4th.

Police say seven of the injuries are serious, but none is life-threatening.
