An advisory panel in the U-S says some current or former heavy smokers should have yearly scans to cut their risk of dying of lung cancer. The Preventive Services Task Force recommends the lung scans for people who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years, or an equivalent amount, and for those who are between the ages of 55 and 80. But it says even those high-risk people should not be scanned if they’re not healthy enough to withstand cancer treatment or if they kicked the habit more than 15 years ago.
