Frigid temperatures and slippery conditions are greeting the first official commute of 2014.

The extreme cold weather alert continues for the city of Toronto, but the rest of the GTA and most of southern Ontario are facing wind chill warnings with temperatures anywhere from minus-20 to minus-30.

The Ontario Safety League says many people will be starting their cars for the first time in days, and may find the battery is dead. The League is expecting emergency road services to be kept busy today.

Fortunately, Toronto Hydro has finally connected the last customers who have been shivering in the dark since before Christmas. But Hydro is warning that there could be additional outages if strong winds bring down more branches onto power lines.

Meantime, additional gift cards will be distributed in Toronto today and tomorrow for those who lost food in the power outage and need financial assistance. The Ontario government calls the demand for aid overwhelming. Officials handed out $160,000 in grocery cards on Tuesday. Long lineups are expected again at Ontario Works offices that will be open in Toronto between 8:30 and 6:30 today and 8:30 and 4:30 tomorrow.

The cards will be offered to communities outside of Toronto over the next few days, specifically in Durham Region, as well as Brampton, Guelph and Hamilton.
