It’s not the coldest January 3rd in Toronto’s history. But it’s close. And it’s certainly the coldest in several years.
Toronto and much of central and eastern Canada remain in the grips of an arctic air mass that is generating wind chills in the minus-thirties.
Environment Canada has issued a windchill warning on top of the city of Toronto’s extreme cold weather alert.
Much of the eastern US and the Canadian Maritimes are being hit by a major snow storm. New York governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency as his state deals with up to 30 centimetres of snow. All flights have been suspended at JFK Airport, although the airport is open. Hundreds of flights have also been cancelled at Boston’s Logan international airport. Flights into and out of Toronto’s Pearson and Billy Bishop airports to those destinations are being impacted.
For the record, the coldest January 3rd in Toronto on record is minus-26 back in 1981. It was minus-24 as of 8:00 this morning.
But things will improve tomorrow. We’ll reach minus-1 tomorrow, which is one degree above normal for this time of year.
