Garth Drabinsky has lost his bid to reclaim his Order of Canada. The honour, bestowed on the Toronto theatre producer back in 1995, was recalled as he was serving a prison sentence after a conviction for fraud. Judge James O’Reilly said he found the Order of Canada advisory council, its secretary general and the Governor General treated Drabinsky quote: fairly and in particular, respected the procedures that he would have legitimately expected to be followed. Drabinsky alleged that the rescinding of the Order of Canada was illegal. Drabinsky’s fraud conviction, along with a business partner in 2009, led to the demise of Livent, the company behind hits including “Phantom of the Opera” and “Ragtime.” Drabinksy is now out on day parole.
