The CD Howe institute is slamming the methods used by municipalities to develop budgets and year end fiscal reports. In a report released Wednesday called “Baffling Budgets: Canada’s Cities Need Better Financial Reporting”, the conservative think tank urges you to examine the budget your city council approved in 2012 and then compare it with the spending reported at the end of the year. The report concludes the methods used are too confusing for most citizens to understand and cites Halton Region for coming dead last in budgeting accuracy between 2003 and 2012 missing spending projections by an average of 22 per cent.
