American upscale fashion retailer Nordstrom will open a three storey luxury department store at Toronto Eaton Centre by the fall of 2016. It will set up in the location occupied by Sears Canada. Construction of the new store is set to begin in March. It’s the latest Canadian store to be announced by Seattle-based Nordstrom, several in other city downtown locations that have been vacated by Sears. Late last year, Hudson’s Bay bought U-S based Saks with plans to roll out seven or eight Saks in Canada as well as bolster its existing mainstream Hudson’s Bay stores. They face pressure from discounters Target which introduced 124 stores here in 2013 and Wal-Mart Stores which is expanding its network in Canada.
