Stephen Harper is about to become the first Canadian Prime Minister to address the Israeli parliament.

Harper will speak to the Knesset during his first official trip to the middle east.

This morning, Harper visited the Church of the Nativity. He then met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah where he announced $66-million in new aid for the Palestinians.

Harper told Abbas that his government’s desire for the Palestinians is “a future of security and prosperity enjoyed in a viable democratic Palestinian state living in peace beside Israel.”

Harper has received an extremely warm welcome so far in his trip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told him, “In standing up for for the truth, your voice, Stephen, has been an indispensable one.”

Harper has plenty of company on his six-day visit. He has been joined by six cabinet ministers and dozens of business and community leaders. He will also visit Jordan.
