It’s less than two weeks since a bout of extreme cold weather brought Toronto’s major airport and parts of the transit system to a halt.

Now another polar vortex has descended on Southern Ontario. But this time, transportation officials say they are ready.

Last time, Pearson airport called a “ground stop” that prevented hundreds of flights from landing, while the cold froze equipment and made it impossible for ground crews to work outside for any length of time. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority’s Toby Lennox says they’ve made some changes this time around. They have warming buses on the tarmac for crews to retreat into. And they have extra crews on call.

Pearson and Billy Bishop airports warn there are some cancellations today, but it’s because of a storms at some destinations along the US eastern seaboard

TTC riders also endured delays as streetcars and switches froze up. The TTC’s Danny Nicholson says they’ve done everything they can to get ready for this cold snap, including running special trains through streetcar tracks overnight. They act as de-icers to keep switches working.

But the TTC now says the extreme cold is causing some of the older streetcars to freeze up, and there will be delays along all routes.
