It was a tragic scene in the tiny Quebec town of L’Isle-Verte near Trios-Rivieres as elderly residents of a senior’s home cried in vain to be saved from flames that engulfed them. The fire was so intense that one man was not able to position a ladder to save his mother, who was standing on her second floor balcony calling for help. The death toll in the early morning fire in extremely cold weather is still officially three, with 11 other people in hospital. But 30 others are still unaccounted for. Officials say many of the residents were over the age of 85 and had mobility issues.
