Renee Fleming says when she sings the Star Spangled Banner at Sunday’s Superbowl, she will really be singing.

Most artists choose to mime singing the national anthem to a pre-recorded track. But the soprano known as the “People’s Diva” says she “wouldn’t know how to slip-sync if you paid me.”

Fleming says here musical accompaniment will be pre-recorded by the New Jersey Symphony, but she will be joined by 32 singers from all branches of the military.

She told the Associate Press that opera singers don’t usually use any technical assistance. She said, “We are the final, major art form that is 100 percent acoustic and unplugged.”

Renee Fleming is performing at the Metropolitan Opera in Rusalka through February.
