It’s not decriminalization or legalization but it would be a major change in Canada’s laws on marijuana possession. Justice Minister, Peter Mackay has directed the justice department to look at and come forward with what could be draft legislation to allow police officers to issue tickets to people caught with small amounts of marijuana rather than lay charges. Canadian police chiefs support a ticketing system for pot possession, which they adopted as a resolution at a meeting in Winnipeg last August. Federal Liberal leader, Justin Trudeau has said that Canada should draw on best practices from marijuana legalization in Colorado and Washington.
