The standoff in Ukraine continues.  Russia has beefed up its military presence in Crimea, where a referendum is planned for this Sunday on whether to join Russia or stay as part of Ukraine.  Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk is promising not to give up a single centimetre of his country’s territory. He heads to Washington this week for a meeting on Wednesday with U.S. President Barack Obama.  Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken says the meeting is to demonstrate America’s support for Ukraine. He also says the U.S. wants Russian President Vladimir Putin to feel the consequences of his actions in Ukraine.  “The financial markets in Russia have hit lows, the Ruble has hit a low, investors are wondering whether to get involved in Russia because of the instability, and all of that is exacting a real cost,” Blinken explains.  He says the White House strategy is to mobilize the international community behind Ukraine, isolate Russia for its actions and reassure U.S. allies and partners.

Donations continue to be made to help the victims of the violent demonstrations in Kyiv last month.  The Ontario government has announced $100,000 in humanitarian aid to Ukraine.  And the Ukrainian Canadian Congress is now working with Canada’s 5 big banks to receive donations.  There’s more information by clicking here.
