Premier Kathleen Wynne is ruling out a hike in the gas tax or the HST to fund transit expansion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Wynne has also ruled out tax hikes for the middle class. Wynne says she won’t rule out new tolls and has decided that single occupant cars may use the HOV system, if they pay a toll. However, she says how exactly the minority Liberal government will pay for transit improvements will have to wait for the next budget. Ontario’s opposition parties say the liberals can’t be believed, reminding voters that former Liberal premier Dalton McGuinty also promised not to raise taxes before introducing a health-care tax on every worker and imposing the H-S-T. Conservative finance critic Vic Fedeli calls Wynne’s pledge a “pre-election mirage”, designed to win NDP support for the Budget. NDP house leader Gilles Bisson has responded to that by responded by tweeting: “one can never believe a Liberal promising to not raise your taxes. Remember McGuinty and his HST.”
