All indications are that Toronto’s Joe Oliver will become Canada’s next finance minister.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to make the announcement that the MP for Eglinton-Lawrence will take over from Jim Flaherty, who made the surprising announcement that his is leaving federal politics to return to the private sector.

There has been no confirmation of the appointment, but Oliver cancelled a trip to British Columbia to stay in Ottawa. His transfer to finance would trigger a mini-cabinet shuffle; the Prime Minister will have to find a replacement for Oliver in Natural Resources.

Oliver certainly has the credentials to assume the finance portfolio. The 73-year-old is a former investment banker and executive director of the Ontario Securities Commission. He made the jump to politics in the last federal election.
