Some of Toronto’s mayoral challengers are taking issue with Olivia Chow’s transit plan. Chow is promising more rush hour TTC bus service at a cost of $15-million a year if she’s elected mayor. She argues the TTC could use some of the 140 new buses on their way, and 100 buses the city is retiring to increase rush hour capacity by 10 percent. But fellow mayoral candidate and former TTC Chair Karen Stintz says Chow “will have to increase property taxes beyond the rate of inflation if she wants to do this.” John Tory says Chow is not forward thinking when it comes to transit. “I would simply say to Ms. Chow, lookit, you’re not going to build the Scarborough subway. I am, she’s not,” says Tory to CP24, “and on the Yonge Street relief line she says maybe she’ll built it eventually. What does that mean? So I’m just saying, look, I’ll spell out how I’m going to pay for this. What about you though, you’re not building any subways as far as I can see.”
Chow continues to promise a return to a light rail transit plan in Scarborough. Tory, Stintz and Mayor Rob Ford are in favour of extending the Bloor-Danforth subway line. Mayoral candidate David Soknacki wants light rail.
