Another Tony Award nominee is closing early.

The Bridges of Madison County is closing May 18th after only 137 performances, one day before its original cast recording is schedule for release.

The musical based on Robert James Waller’s novel received only four Tony nominations, including for Jason Robert Brown’s score and Kelli O’Hara’s leading performance. But it did not receive a best musical nomination.

It has struggled at the box office since it opened.

Many Broadway watchers have wondered whether a musical can survive on Broadway without a tie-in to a Disney movie, a rock’n’roll theme, or a movie or television star in the lead. Stephen Sondheim famously dismissed the current state of Broadway as a “theme park.”

Even the Tony-leading A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is struggling to find an audience, although that may turn around with its ten nominations.

Bridges of Madison County joins The Velocity of Autumn as early casualties leading up to the Tonys next month.

A tour is still in the works for next year.
