Ontario’s NDP leader says her party can no longer support the Liberal government.

Andrea Horwath has announced this morning her caucus unanimously decided to defeat the Liberal budget and send Ontario to the polls.

Horwath pointed to the ongoing gas plant scandal and other unfulfilled promises. She says the Liberal government can no longer be trusted to deliver what it promises.

The Conservative Party has already denounced the budget and has been calling for an election for months. Without the NDP support, Premier Kathleen Wynne’s government can’t survive.

Horwath made the decision despite approval of the budget by traditional NDP supporters in organized labour. The OFL, CUPE, UNIFOR, and the Nurses’ Union have all come out in support of the budget.

Earlier, Premier Kathleen Wynne had given Horwath a week to decide on a course of action. It will now be up to the Premier to force the opposition to defeat her budget, or to ask the Lieutenant-Governor to call an election.

Either way, Ontario appears to be headed for the polls as early as next month.
