The commander of NATO forces in Europe says the alliance has to walk a fine line in Eastern Europe.

US General Philip Breedlove told an audience of Canadian military officials and diplomats in Ottawa last night that NATO must reassure its allies in countries bordering the volatile situation in Ukraine, but avoid provoking Russia into further action.

Breedlove’s comments come as 30 pro-Russian insurgents were killed in clashes with Ukrainian forces who are working to eliminate dissidents from the eastern city of Slovyansk.

Ukraine has also sent an elite military unit to the Black Sea port city of Odessa, which has seen increasing violence by insurgents over the past few days.

And Germany has issued a warning to its citizens to leave southern and eastern Ukraine, citing concerns about stability and the potential for violence in the region.
