An American opera and theatre director who’s spending a great deal of time in Southern Ontario this year – has won Sweden’s major music prize.
Peter Sellars has been named as one of two winners of the 2014 Polar Prize.
The awards committee says Sellars has shown that classical music is not about dusty sheet music, but is “a way of reflecting and depicting the world.”
Sellars recently staged Handel’s “Hercules” for the Canadian Opera Company.
He’s also directing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Stratford Festival.
The Polar Prize was founded by the late Stig Anderson, who managed Sweden’s pop sensation, ABBA. It is customarily awarded to a classical and a pop artist.
Sellars shares this year’s award with 87 year-old American rock’n’roll legend Chuck Berry.
