Ten months after a fiery train crash destroyed a large part of a town in Quebec, charges have been laid against the company responsible and three of its employees.
The insolvent Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic Railway has been charged with 47 counts of criminal negligence causing death late yesterday. The engineer of the train that derailed in Lac Megantic, and two managers, face the same charges.
Thomas Walsh is the lawyer for engineer Thomas Harding. He says client is a good man who made some errors, and it will be up to a jury to “determine to what extent those errors could or couldn’t constitute the degree of negligence necessary to be found guilty.”
Forty-seven people were killed on July 6th of last year when a runaway train pulling tanker cars filled with flammable oil crashed into Lac Megantic. The disaster prompted both rail companies and governments to review policies regarding the transport of dangerous goods.
The three men will appear in court today.
