NEW POLL SUGGESTS A LIBERAL MAJORITY ON JUNE 12th, AS 'HURRICANE' HAZEL McCALLION BACKS WYNNE

Ontario Liberals could be on a track for a majority government after the June 12th election.

A Forum Research poll suggests close to four in 10, or 38 percent, of Ontarians would vote Liberal compared with 35 percent who would vote PC.  The New Democrats have 33 percent voter support. And the poll projects the Liberals would have enough seats in the legislature to take a majority.

Longtime Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion has thrown her support behind Liberal premier Kathleen Wynne.  “As a leader I’m endorsing her…I think we need more women leading parties and cities,” McCallion explained to a gathering at Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre.  When asked about NDP leader Andrea Horwath, McCallion said, “I don’t understand her policy.”

Mayor McCallion says she is particularly concerned about the announcement by PC leader Tim Hudak to eliminate 100-thousand public sector jobs.  “If you’re going to layoff staff, how is that service going to be provided?  You’ve got to do your  homework.  Just to say 100,000 jobs with no back up material to prove it.”

As for the Liberal government’s gas plant scandal, Mayor McCallion says “it was a terrible mistake, but it’s water under the bridge and time to put the province of Ontario back on track.”

At Queen’s Park this morning, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath announced a campaign promise to have a leaner cabinet if she’s elected.  But she also plans to add a Minister of Savings and Accountability.  “There’s a lot of people at Queen’s Park who’s job it is to spend the dollars, but I’m the sort of New Democrat who believes we need to count the pennies.  A key role for the new minister will be to identify new savings representing .5 percent of the provincial budget.”

Horwath also visits St. Catherines and Brantford today.  PC leader Tim Hudak is spending the day in Toronto.
