SOULPEPPER, CANSTAGE LEAD TORONTO THEATRE CRITICS AWARDS

Toronto’s two largest non-profit theatre companies dominated to the Toronto Theatre Critics Awards.

Soulpepper won five awards for two of its productions. Angels In America took three awards, including best production of a play, which it shared with Tarragon Theatre’s Lungs.

Damien Atkins and Nancy Palk won acting awards for Angels.

Artistic Director Albert Shultz won Best Director of a Play for Soulpepper’s Of Human Bondage. The play’s designers were also honoured.

CanStage won four awards. London Road was chosen Best Musical, and Shaw Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell won Best Director of a musical for her work on London Road. Carly Street won an acting award for Venus in Fur and Robert Lepage’s Needles and Opium was the best new Canadian play.

Chelina Kennedy won best actress in a musical for The Littlest Mermaid.

Ramin Karimloo won Best Actor in a musical for playing Jean Valjean” in Les Miz and James Monroe Inglehart’s Genie in Aladdin won best supporting actor. They were both Mirvish Productions presentations. The two actors are now up for Tony Awards for the same roles.
