Canada’s Prime Minister says the Harper government’s maternal, newborn and child health initiative will continue past its sunset date – and Stephen Harper told an international summit in Toronto that it’s time to build on the initial success of the program with Phase Two – and a 3.5-billion-dollar commitment over five years.

The funding builds on the 2.8-billion dollars Harper committed to his so-called “Muskoka Initiative,”  unveiled in 2010 when Canada hosted the G-8 summit.

Harper has made helping young mothers and newborns in developing countries his signature aid priority.

And one of the world’s most powerful philanthropic couples is praising his efforts.

Melinda Gates and her husband Bill are in Toronto – urging governments everywhere to support Harper’s initiative – for their own economic good.

Melinda says Canada has become an important partner to the Gates Foundation in finding innovative ways to help the world’s poorest people.

Gates is the keynote speaker at Harper’s international conference .
