One of the stars of Star Trek: the Next Generation is trying to improve the literacy of American children.
LeVar Burton was the host of Reading Rainbow, the Peabody-and-Emmy winning PBS series that ran from 1983 to 2006. Reading Rainbow is now available as an IPad app, but Burton has launched a Kickstarter campaign to make the show more available. He wants to raise the money to bring the new venture into 1,500 needy schools.
Burton is offering a variety of incentives for donors, everything from reading a favourite family story to a chance to wear the visor he wore on as “Geordie La Forge” on Star Trek:TNG.
The Kickstarter campaign was launched yesterday morning with a goal of raising a million dollars. As of this morning, it had raised well over a million-and-a-half.
