The Prime Minister says Canada is considering increasing its long-term military presence in Eastern Europe.

But Stephen Harper says no decisions have been made. But Canada is sending an additional 74 troops to a training exercise in Latvia.

Harper made the announcement in Poland, where western leaders are gathering to commemorate the 25th anniversary of that country’s emergence from communism.

The leaders will then go on to a G-7 meeting in Brussels to discuss the crisis in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has not been invited.

Harper says he welcomes Barack Obama’s announcement that the US will boost its military contributions to the region.

The US President  met with Ukraine’s new President today. Obama praised Petro Poroshenko for his leadership as pro-Russian militants continue to wreak havoc across eastern Ukraine.

Poroshenko will be sworn into office this weekend. Harper plans to attend.
