Hopeful news for those who suffer from a rare form of cystic fibrosis.

Ontario’s health insurance plan will cover the cost of an astoundingly expensive drug that is used to treat the disease.

The drug Kalydeco costs $350,000 a year.

Alberta led the lengthy negotiations with the drug manufacturer Vertex Pharmaceuticals – after the provinces complained they were being charged too much for Kalydeco.

During a campaign stop in Ottawa, Premier Kathleen Wynne said the timing of the announcement was not related to the Ontario election and she’s just glad those who need the drug will now have it covered.

Approximately 118 people across Canada are treated with Kalydeco.
