Polls suggest Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak won the Ontario election debate Tuesday night, but a new Forum research survey suggests the Kathleen Wynne Liberals are ahead with 40 percent voter support.  The survey was taken after the debate.  Thirty-five percent of those polled say they support the Progressive Conservatives with 22 percent in favour of the New Democrats.  Two percent plan to vote for the Green Party.

For the first time, Tim Hudak is admitting his plan to cut 100,000 public sector jobs could cost billions of dollars in severance pay.  Hudak visited the Zoomerplex yesterday and sat down for a chat with Zoomer Radio’s Libby Znaimer, who pointed out to Hudak that it will be very expensive to cut workers, who in arbitration, can receive a month of pay for every year worked.  “Let’s be clear,” Hudak begins, “the vast majority of these are by attrition, by retirement when people retire from the job.”

Znaimer then reminds him that “we no longer have mandatory retirement and all the statistics show that people are retiring later and later and you can’t make them leave…so surely you’ve put some kind of number on that.”  Hudak replies, “We have and I’ll have to look back at the plan, but I know it’s in the billions of dollars to make sure we have a reserve for unintended consequences, whether that’s a severance payment, whether that’s the economy slows down.”

The Ontario election is one week from today on Thursday June 12th.
