The search for a suspect in one of the worst mass shootings in the history of the RCMP has come to an end.

Police arrested 24-year-old Justin Bourque after a 30-hour manhunt involving nearly 300 officers.

Three Mounties were killed in the initial encounter with an armed gunman in a neighbourhood of Moncton, New Brunswick, on Wednesday. Two other officers were wounded.

RCMP Superintendent Marlene Snowman says the force is grieving the loss of its members. And Assistant Commissioner Roger Brown says his thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the slain officers, the wounded, and the survivors who were on scene when their colleagues were killed.

Snowman says Bourque was not armed when he was cornered in a residential backyard around midnight last night. But officers recovered weapons nearby.

Commissioner Bob Paulson is on his way to Moncton to offer his sympathy and support.

Police also identified the three slain officers: 32-year-old Constable David Ross from Victoriaville, Quebec; 45-year-old Constable Fabrice Gevaudan from Boulogne-Billancourt, France; and 40-year-old Constable Douglas Larche of Saint John.
