Today is voting day in Ontario.  There are 107 ridings at stake. At dissolution, the Liberals held 48 seats in a minority government, the Progressive Conservatives had 37 and the New Democrats held 21 while one seat was vacant.  And there’s a good chance the province might end up right where it started once all the votes are counted tonight.

Recent polls have suggested Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals were in a virtual tie with Tim Hudak’s Progressive Conservatives, with Andrea Horwath’s New Democrats in third place. Horwath was the busiest of the three leaders yesterday on the final day of campaigning.  She triggered the election campaign after refusing to support the minority Liberal government’s budget last month.

The three main party leaders have mainly focused on the economy by offering their own visions of how to best help Ontario succeed.  Kathleen Wynne got into political life in 2000 as a school board trustee and then says she was motivated to do more as a Liberal.  “I think that the first defining moment for me,” she explains, “was when Mike Harris cut social assistance rates by 21 percent and then at the same time spent, sending a $200 cheque to everyone in the province.  I was so angry.”

Tim Hudak’s Progressive Conservatives meantime, have prioritized shrinking government and cutting corporate, and eventually personal, taxes to stimulate economic growth.  “I know that voters are going to choose hope over fear, where we’ll win out, and we’ll get Ontario back on a path of prosperity.”
