There were many raised eyebrows at city hall yesterday after an auditor’s report revealed questionable expenses by the outgoing CEO of the city-owned Sony Centre.

Auditor-General Jeffrey Griffiths reported that Dan Brambilla’s company was paid more than half a million dollars in consulting fees on a project in the theatre that was later scrapped, at the same time that he was collecting a salary as Sony’s CEO.

After he spent $15,000 on his wedding at the Centre in 2010, Brambilla submitted a bill for almost $8,000 in fees for promoting the Centre as a wedding facility.

And Griffiths says he expensed travel by his wife, and six political fundraisers.

Nobody on the board of directors, which included city councillors, raised alarms about the expenses. Councillor Shelley Carroll says the city isn’t providing arms-length boards and agencies with the training to deal with this kind of situation.

A group of city councillors and senior staff will take over management of the Centre to appoint a new CEO and permanent board.
