The Liberal’s victory was powered by a nearly sweeping win in the city of Toronto and the GTA.  The Liberals won 22 of Toronto’s 24 seats and 17 of the 20 seats in the crucial 905 belt.  In fact, the Progressive Conservatives were reduced to a single 905 seat in this election. It’s held by incumbent Christine Elliot in Whitby-Oshawa.  “We have to be resolved that we’re going to continue to do the things that are important to all of our constituents, so I’m going to work hard with my colleagues to make sure we can hold them to account and make sure that the results are produced for the residents of Ontario that we need.  It’s about jobs and the economy and that there are jobs out there, particularly for young people.”

The P.C.’s lost to the New Democrats in the other Oshawa riding.  But a couple of long time NDP MPP’s went down to defeat in the city of Toronto.  Michael Prue lost to Arthur Potts in the riding of Beaches-East York.  And Rosario Marchese no longer represents Trinity-Spadina.  Instead it went to Liberal newcomer Han Dong, who was “very excited” with the victory, calling himself “a very small part of this whole campaign.” Dong said, “whether it’s social housing, whether it’s transit, whether it’s smarter urban planning or senior care, these key issues, we’re going to deliver.”

In another upset, Liberal Peter Milczyn beat P.C. incumbent Doug Holyday, in the Etobicoke-Lakeshore battle of former Toronto City Councillors.  Now 72, Holyday says he’ll probably retire.

The Tories were shut out in Brampton and Mississauga.  Their efforts to break into Mississauga were dealt a blow by beloved Mayor Hazel McCallion, who endorsed Kathleen Wynne for Premier.

In Halton, Liberal Indira Naidoo-Harris ended the 15 year reign of P.C. incumbent Ted Chudleigh.  In Burlington, Conservative incumbent Jane McKenna was defeated by Liberal challenger Eleanor McMahon.  Liberal Sandra Yeung Racco defeated the PC incumbent in Thornhill.  And in Newmarket-Aurora… local Liberal councillor Chris Ballard beat P.C. Jane Twinney in a riding that was left vacant by veteran Tory Frank Klees.
