The Harper Government says it will review Friday’s Supreme Court ruling reaffirming Canadians’ right to online privacy. In an unanimous decision, the justices ruled police need a search warrant to get information from Internet service providers about their subscribers’ identities during investigations. The Executive Director of OpenMedia.ca, Steve Anderson, says the ruling will impact the government’s cyber-bullying bill and he’s calling on Ottawa to cut extreme spying provisions from Bill C-13. The high court’s landmark ruling comes in the appeal of a Saskatchewan man facing child pornography charges. Police used his Internet address to get further details from his online service provider, all without first obtaining a search warrant. Lawyers for the man contend the man’s right to be protected from unlawful search and seizure was violated.
