Lights were out, trees and hydro polls are still down, and one community has suffered extensive damage after severe storms ripped through southern Ontario last evening.

About a thousand Toronto Hydro customers still don’t have power after the storm blew tree branches onto power lines and damaged Hydro equipment. The power outages are spread around the city. They hope to have everyone back on the grid by this afternoon.

Another 6,000 people around the province still don’t have power either. They’re mainly located in Essa Township, south of Barrie. Hundreds of people have had to leave their homes because of damage from a tornado. It struck about 100 homes in a subdivision with winds upwards of 180 kilometres an hour.

The Mayor of Angus, Terry Dowdall, says it’s amazing there were no serious injuries. The twister touched down around 5:00, when children would normally be playing outdoors.

A state of emergency has been declared in Angus, giving the community more resources to clean up from the damage.
