Stephen Sondheim has revealed that an upcoming movie version of his Tony-Award winning musical Into the Woods will contain several changes from the original.

The musical is a re-telling of several fairy tales woven together with darker outcomes. They include Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood. Sondheim says Disney has objected to some of the content of the musical, including the death of a princess, infidelity, and the sexual nature of the relationship between Red Riding Hood and the wolf.

But he also says the movie will include some new songs. It stars Meryl Streep as The Witch and Johnny Depp as the Wolf.

The Disney-fied version of Into the Woods opens Christmas Day.
