CHANGES COMING TO THE TEMPORARY WORKER PROGRAM

We will find out this afternoon what changes the Harper government is going to make to its embattled temporary foreign workers program. The program has come under fire after a number of businesses were accused of abusing the program. In one case, Royal Bank employees were asked to train foreign workers to take over their jobs. A second case involved more than 60 Alberta iron-workers who alleged they were let go in favour of foreign workers. Industry groups consulted by Employment Minister Jason Kenney predict the government will make it more difficult for firms to bring in workers for unskilled, low-paying jobs, such as in the food-service industry. Another change will increase the fines for firms that abuse the system. Kenney has already told the Commons he intended to severely punish what he called non-compliant employers. The federal government estimates there are more than 385,000 temporary foreign workers in Canada.
