An Egyptian-Canadian journalist has been sentenced to seven years in prison in Egypt on charges related to terrorism.

Mohamed Fahmy worked for Al-Jazeera English. He was sentenced along with an Australian and Egyptian colleague.

The three men were accused of providing a platform for the Muslim Brotherhood group of ousted president Mohammed Morsi. Egypt’s government has branded the Brotherhood a terrorist organization.

They were also accused of airing falsified footage with the intent of damaging Egypt’s national security.

Fahmy’s relatives in Canada say the government’s case is “ridiculous” and they will appeal. But they add they have little faith in a system they denounce as corrupt.

The men have denied the charges and have continually said they were only doing their jobs.

Fahmy also worked for the New York Times and CNN before working for Al-Jazeera. His family moved to Canada in 1991
