The Goodman Theatre in Chicago is presenting a re-working of a classic musical set in Scotland, with help from a Canadian.
American Director Rachel Rockwell and Canadian librettist Brian Hill are presenting a new adaptation of Brigadoon, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s fable of a village in the highlands of Scotland that only appears once every hundred years.
Hill and Rockwell haven’t changed the essential story. But, with the permission of Lerner and Loewe’s estate, they have emphasized the political and military upheaval of 18th Century Scotland that forced the villagers of Brigadoon isolate themselves from the troubles of the world.
Brian Hill was born in Kitchener and now lives in New York. His credits include a musical adaptation of Timothy Findley’s Not Wanted on the Voyage and was nominated for a Drama Desk award for the libretto of The Story of My Life. Both musicals were written with his partner, Neil Bartram.
Brigadoon opens in Chicago tonight.
